Day 16 - A song that makes you cry (or nearly)

Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Op.11. The most chillingly beautiful piece of music ever written in my opinion. The first three notes are enough to sends chills up my spine.

Original broadcast from the ‘Last night of the Proms’ at Albert Hall in London September 15 2001. Leonard Slatkin conducts the BBC Orchestra. It was played in place of the usual patriotic revelry, in memory of those who died 4 days earlier.

It’s actually an ode to love, but has been used more widely as a funeral/memorial piece including the end of the film Platoon, Amelie and The Elephant Man.
